The PetLab ranked each state in four key categories to determine the best place to visit if you like to travel with your dog as a companion. The four categories were:
- Outdoor recreation
- Dog-friendly establishments
- Pet care and welfare professions
- Climate and environment
Based on their research, the top ten states for dog lovers are as follows:
Hawaii
Hawaii came out on top as the most dog-friendly state in the USA. Their rankings across the four categories were as follows:
- Outdoor recreation: 1
- Dog-friendly establishments: 6
- Pet care and welfare professions: 4
- Climate and environment: 23
Massachusetts
Massachusetts was ranked as the second most dog-friendly state in the USA with high rankings across all categories apart from care and welfare. Their rankings across the four categories were as follows:
- Outdoor recreation: 2
- Dog-friendly establishments: 18
- Pet care and welfare professions: 37
- Climate and environment: 12
Connecticut
In third place was Connecticut, whose overall rankings were boosted by their pet care and welfare professions. Their rankings across the four categories were as follows:
- Outdoor recreation: 5
- Dog-friendly establishments: 19
- Pet care and welfare professions: 25
- Climate and environment: 5
California
Dogs are very popular in California so it’s no surprise that the Golden State featured in the top ten. Their rankings across the four categories were as follows:
- Outdoor recreation: 4
- Dog-friendly establishments: 27
- Pet care and welfare professions: 2
- Climate and environment: 33
Colorado
Colorado rounds off the top five with their overall ranking reaping the benefits of the large number of vets in the state. Their rankings across the four categories were as follows:

- Dog-friendly establishments: 8

- Climate and environment: 3
Washington
Considering President Biden has a pet dog, it’s a good job that Washington made the top ten. Their rankings across the four categories were as follows:

- Climate and environment: 10
Oregon
Oregon came in 7th place in terms of the most dog-friendly states in the USA. Their rankings across the four categories were as follows:

Arizona
Arizona’s climate played a big part in the Grand Canyon State finishing inside the top ten. Their rankings across the four categories were as follows:

New Jersey
Dog lovers in New York should perhaps consider moving down the road to New Jersey. NJ’s rankings across the four categories were as follows:

Alaska
The final state to make the top ten was Alaska with the Last Frontier unsurprisingly ranking high for outdoor recreation. Their rankings across the four categories were as follows:
