Electricity bills in the USA have steadily increased over the past decade, but prices have risen sharply over the past two years. The price increases have been superior to the rate of inflation in the US, which has caused great stress for millions of households in the country.
In 2022, prices rose by an average of 10.7% across the nation, the highest recorded growth since the turn of the century. With further rises expected this year, electricity experts at Texas Electricity Ratings have analyzed state-by-state data to predict which states will pay the most for electricity this year. The top ten is as follows:
Hawaii
Households in Hawaii are projected to pay the most for electricity in 2024, with the average annual cost forecasted at $3,450.55. This works out at around $287 per month despite Hawaiians consuming 24.5% less electricity than the national average.
Maine
Maine residents are projected to have the second-highest electricity bills in 2024, with the average annual cost estimated at $2,383.75. Maine is anticipated to undergo the most substantial price increase, at a whopping 23.35%.
Florida
Floridians should expect an expensive year for electricity bills, with their average annual costs for 2024 forecasted at $2,367.14. This is an increase of over $200, with their 2023 electricity bills averaging $2151.66.
Connecticut
According to the research, Connecticut will be the fourth most expensive place to live in the USA in 2024 when it comes to electricity bills. Residents in Connecticut will pay, on average, $2,362.28 for the year for electricity.
Rhode Island
Rhode Island rounds off the top five, with households predicted to pay $2,361.85 for electricity in 2024. This is a mere $0.43 less than the forecasted bills in Connecticut but still 36.5% higher than the national average.
Maryland
Residents in Maryland will have the sixth-highest electricity bills in the USA in 2024, with the average annual cost forecasted at $2,265.19.
California
Californians may have to take more advantage of the sunshine in their state in 2024 to reduce their electricity bills. The average annual electricity cost for residents in California in 2024 is projected to be $2,196.94.
Arizona
Arizona is just behind California in the rankings. Households in Arizona will be expected to fork out, on average, $2,190.60 for their electricity bills this year.
Nevada
Nevada is perhaps most famous for Las Vegas, a City that is so bright with lights you can see from space at night. With that in mind, it is perhaps appropriate that Nevada makes it into the top ten with a projected annual electricity cost of $2,132.50 per household.
Alabama
The top ten is completed by Alabama, whose residents will pay an average of $2,064.63 for electricity this year.
